Running Again
I started running again about a week ago. Well, mostly walking with a bit of running. It's that walk/run interval training method and I'm at 1 minutes of running to 4 minutes of walking. The first run felt like a joke. It felt like I could keep it up forever. A week later and the joke isn't as funny.
I envy the people who find really active pursuits they can stick with. They're either dumb as an ox, phenomenally dedicated, or getting a lot of joy out of it. I haven't found an active activity, so to speak, that's stuck in my "top 5" list of things I like doing. Reading, watching movies and programming just don't burn that many calories and eating and drinking have somewhat the opposite affect.
Then there's that "not stiff, but your legs have done work" feeling. It's not an unpleasant feeling, but it doesn't even come close to a good itch scratching.
So right now, I'm making the best of the "honey moon" phase. The weather is nice for running even at 2 in the morning, it's still easy, and I haven't done it so much there's a repetition issue. The real test will be whether I'm running in the rain in spite of feeling like crap in about 2 months from now

I hate running. I am about to take it up with the walk/run/walk method. But I know I'll still hate it!

I find it a bit easier with a portable music player or radio. Use the running as an excuse to buy a Rio, Muvo or iPod tampon, er, squishy, er Shuffle. It's all about the distraction.:-)
I've got an MPIO mp3 player that Paul bought me for Christmas. Except we have to yell at each other "run!" "walk!" & "I'm going to die!" (that last one is usually me.) So I think he needs to get one...but he's been thinking about it so maybe this will be the push he needs.
Threaten him with a handicapping system if he doesn't. A backpack with 10 or 20 kilos in it should make him the first to say "I'm going to die!"
