Sun Rise

I left an hour early today after covering for a colleague yesterday. At 5am in the pre-dawn light I thought to hell with going home and went in search of pictures.

I'm currently looking for cityscapes and thought sunrise at Burnaby mountain park. I got there just before 6am, and was totally alone. The sun hadn't risen yet, but it was quite light. My god, the feeling of warm and serenity in that magic light just before sun rise. I've experienced this before, but had forgotten. How could I forget?

Watching the sun come up was glorious. As the line of the sun walked across the face of the city, buildings came out of a muted back drop into highlight. Mountains cast shadows that created a geometric waltz of light and dark as the sun moved to it's cosmic rhythm.

This is exactly why the graveyard shift has it benefits. I would have never thought to get out of bed for this. Shame on me.

Shoot First, Ask Questions Later

I've been coveting a really good digital camera for along time. Sadly, the features I wanted were more than I wanted to pay. The nice thing about technology is, for the most part, this kind of technology price curve problem is solved by time. For me, that time has come and I'm now the happy owner of a Canon S410.

The S410 wasn't exactly what I was looking for. The market didn't have exactly what I'm looking for. Smaller, a shorter shutter lag and quicker time to store a picture would have been better. But ...

Damn, it takes nice pictures!

It's small enough I've been carrying it around with me everywhere and snapping pictures. It's a joy to download them to my computer and see a clear, crisp image. The 3x zoom is especially nice. The reviews I read all stressed this was an important feature. They're absolutely right. It adds to the price but for me it's worth every penny. Also sweet was buying from a local owner operated camera store. This guy has been in the community for a long time and people have good things to say about him. His price was the same as everyone else's, so buying there was a no brainer!

The down side? The spending has only just started. I need a bigger compact flash card, spare battery, there's this filter thing I saw in a magazine ......
